PRTC Bus Booking Online Instructions

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has officially launched the online e-ticket facility at the Legislative Assembly on September 2014. The online bus ticket reservation system for PRTC has been developed by Bangalore-based Radiant Info Systems in association with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) allowing passengers to book  Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus tickets from anywhere using Internet connection.

Using the online portal of bus booking, you can book your bus tickets up to a maximum of 6 passengers only.

“The Puducherry Road Transport Corporation Ltd (PRTC) portal will enable them to sell tickets on multiple delivery channels on an anywhere any time basis. Passengers can book for PRTC buses online, mobile and other channels will be introduced in due course of time. Passengers can pay through major credit and debit cards. The traveller can choose the boarding point and also their seats,” said Y.V. Srikar of Radiant Info Systems Ltd. (Source -The Hindu)

How to Book Bus Ticket Online using PRTC Website


If you are a frequent bus traveller, register yourself in the PRTC Online website ( www.busindia.com) to access its full benefits using the Sign-in form at the top menu.

In addition, you can check available buses, bus routes and bus timings by browsing the website as Guests. All the data fetched are up to date and are displayed in clear format.

The above image is the one you will see as soon as you go to PRTC website. On the left side is your search function where you will need to input the datas as per your requirement.

Example : From Pondicherry to Chennai , I need to book four seats at 08/11/2014 - one way and click "Search"

The specific search is processed in the next page where you can see a bus symbol moving from left to right.

The fetched datas are then displayed in the above format. The coloured boxes give you a clear information on what each boxes meant.

The "23 seats" that are displayed in blue buttons are the available seats in each buses.

Now, click on the blue button ( shown as 23 seats) for getting details of the bus that you will need to travel from Pondicherry to Chennai according to your time, route and location.

This will take you to the confirmation page after which you are asked to pay through your debit/credit cards. Also, a confirmation mail will be sent along with a PNR number. And you are done.

Status of Booking and Cancellation


To check whether your tickets are booked successfully and to print them , you can go to "View Ticket" on the top menu. You will be asked for your email id and the date booked. Here, you can check the status of your booked bus tickets.

And in case if you don't want your tickets or the tickets has been cancelled for some reason, you can use the "Cancellation" on the top menu where you will be asked for the PNR number, Email ID and Mobile number.

How to Get an International Driving Licence in Pondicherry

If you are planning to drive your trip from one place to another, especially which involves borders it is mandatory to hold an International Driving Permit.

What is International Driving Licence?


The International Driving Licence, also known as International Driver's Permit (IDP)  is a document officially translated into 10 different languages holding information like your full name, relevant driver information and photo granting  access to drive your motor vehicle legally while abroad. It has been recognized by most countries as an official document allowing you to drive.

It is important to note that International Driving Permit (IDP) is different from government-issued driver’s licence. Hence while driving it is important to carry both IDP, passport and your driving licence when abroad. Also, to travel abroad you should obtain your IDP in the same country that has issued your driver’s licence. For example, Pondicherry driving license holders who are gone to other countries on work permit or short stay should get their IDP issued from Puducherry Government for travelling abroad. The validity of this permit is for one year.

How to get an International Driver's Licence?


For to get an international driving licence in Puducherry, Pondicherry city, you should get a permit to drive a motor vehicle in other countries by visiting the Puducherry Police Department or its website.

  • to enclose the copy of driving licence number along with date of issue and validity.
  • to enclose a medical certificate as given in Form 1A - Download the medical form here  (print and fill it)
  • to enclose an attested photocopy copy of the following - Indian Passport , Driving Licence, Visa, Air Ticket, Ration Card, Voters ID Card, Medical Certificate and Licence Rules of the country proposed to visit.
  • Non Conviction Certificate if necessary ( for persons who stayed more than 15 days aboard).
  • and pay a fees of Rs. 500/-  along with the recent driving test scores (or it is a must to have a re-test if the Driving Licence issued is within three months.)

Emergency and Useful Numbers - Legitimate Informations

Social Networking can be great asset to the needy when used for purposes like the below. Few weeks back, I came across this Whatsapp message saying it came from Narendra Modi. Whether the fact is true or not, what requires attention is the message in it. Though the same message has been circulated among peoples through other social networks, many are still doubting the legitimacy of such messages since it is not new get many such forwarded messages everyday. 

We at Pondicherrywiki.com took a step forward to see whether that the messages are legitimate along with our findings to the original destination as per the importance of the messages. Kindly share and help someone in need.

1. Supreme Court gas announced that any person who meets with a road accident can be taken to the nearby hospital immediately. Hospital must not ask for police report to admit him or her and it is the the Doctor's duty to do first aid. Police can be informed later.

Our findings - True! We came across such an existence of law through the International Road Federation Website. According to the reports, 

Every doctor whether at a Government hospital or otherwise has the professional obligation to extend his services with due expertise for protecting life. No law or State action can intervene to avoid / delay the discharge of the paramount obligation cast upon members of the medical profession. The obligation being total, absolute and paramount, laws of procedure whether in statutes or otherwise which would interfere with the discharge of this obligation cannot be sustained and must, therefore, give way.

The treatment of the patient should not wait for the arrival of the police or completion of legal formalities. All hospitals and doctors are required to provide immediate medical aid to all the cases,whether medico-legal or not.

Also, under Section 134 of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988, the driver and / or the owner of the motor vehicle responsible for a road accident is required to take all reasonable steps to secure medical attention for the injured person by conveying him to the nearest medical practitioner or hospital, unless it is not practicable to do so on account of mob fury or any other reason beyond his control.

Our findings - True! A very appreciative website that tends to the needy. Apart from retrieving information about the blood donor for the needy, you yourself can register yourself to donate blood. 4. If you see any begging children anywhere in India, you can contact the RED SOCIETY in India tat 9940217816. They will help the children for their studies.

Our findings - Partly True! We checked the Red Society Website for such programs or  activities they run and it seems that we are unable to find one.  But, we did came across a news report from Times of India saying that such rehabilitation project for child beggars is in place as on Feb 27, 2014. 

Also, we found that it is the National Child Labour Project in TamilNadu that which runs the project and it not only for child beggars but also child labours.

5. If you find any important documents like Driving license, Ration card, Passport, Bank Pass Book, etc., missed by someone, simply put them into any near by Post Boxes. They will automatically reach the owner and Fine will be collected from them.

Our findings - False!  We have checked the information and we did not get any legitimate response of the same.

Our findings - Partly True!  As per the information we have, Pasam Trust also called as German Hospital is a Non-Profit medical center headed by Dr Mascarenhas and it had run free Plastic surgery camp in the past with the phone numbers given above for pre-registration. But, as per the current year 2014, there is no information of free surgery but it is true that Pasam Trust is a NGO and it provides free medical and basic health service to the needy conducting  medical and eye camps, vaccination programme, performing cataracts and Glaucoma operation, Plastic surgeries for fire accidents patents, providing, uniforms and bags for the school children, Dental cares.

Our findings - Partly True!  The facts are right but the contact numbers shared is completely wrong. The fact that Free Education and Free hostel for Handicapped/Physically Challenged children is provided by Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled run by a board of trustees with Mr. Mahantesh G.K., Chairman & Founder Managing Trustee. The organisation 's mission is to empower the visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged people through developmental initiatives focusing on educational, social, economic, cultural and technological aspects. Our findings - False!  Having retrieved the right facts, we found that the Cancer Institute in Chennai has clearly mentioned that the message circulated is false.

FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION
It has been noticed that an information is being circulated through the internet as emails and as 
face book posts regarding the availability of a certain medicine called ‘Imitinef mercilet’at the 
Cancer Institute, Adyar, Chennai. The message also often makes the statement about this drug 
curing all blood cancers and it being offered free of charge at the Cancer Institute. We want to 
make it clear that this is a misleading message being circulated. We believe that the drug name 
mentioned is a distortion of the drug called ‘imatinib mesylate’ which is a drug used to treat a 
type of blood cancer called ‘chronic myeloid leukemia’. This drug is available all over India and 
is being prescribed at all Cancer Centers and is not exclusive to the Cancer Institute, Adyar, 
Chennai. The drug support programme is also active in all major cancer centers in the country. 
Hence people who come across the misleading message via internet are requested not to 
circulate it.

Step by Step Procedure on How to Apply for a PAN Card Online in India

PAN card has become mandatory whether you work or not. Apart from being used for financial transactions, it also serves as an identity proof.

Permanent Account Number, abbreviated as PAN is a 10-digit unique alphanumeric identity allotted to each taxpayer by the Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board of Direct Taxes in order to track financial transactions and to prevent tax evasion.

How to apply for a PAN ?


Step 1 - Opening the Form


You have to fill in the form - Form 49A (or) Form 49AA by visiting this website https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/ for applying for NEW PANs.

You will see a page like the above, in there click NEW PAN Form 49A which opens a new window "Application for a New Pan".

In that click 'Online Application for New PAN (Form 49A)" which again opens a third window. Scroll down till you see 'Apply for a new PAN Card' along with a drop down box 'Category for applicant'.
Choose "Individual" or accordingly for companies or Goverment agencies.

On selection, you will get the online application form 49A which is to be filled.

Step 2 - Filling the form


If you are applying Applying Online -
Fill in the form 49A online using capital letters, attach the required proof of identify and proof of address. A confirmation screen with all the data filled by the applicant will be displayed which can be re-edited if needed and you will need to confirm the same. After confirmation, an acknowledgement with a unique 15-digit acknowledgement number will be displayed which is needed to be saved and printed.

If you are printing the form - 
Fill the application in block letters in English with black ink.
Paste a recent colour photograph (size 3.5 cm X 2.5 cm).
And provide the signature within the box. If thumb impression, then you should get the thumb impression attested by Magistrate or a Notary Public or a Gazetted Officer, under official seal and stamp.


Step 3 - Copies of proof of Identity and Address


Attach Proof of Identity (POI) - Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India,Elector's photo identity card,Driving License,Passport,Ration card having photograph of the applicant,Arm's license,Pensioner card having photograph of the applicant, etc.

Proof of Address (POA) - Electricity Bill, Landline Telephone or Broadband connection bill, Water Bill, Consumer gas connection card or book or piped gas bill, Bank account statement or as per note 2, Depository account statement, Credit card statement, etc.

and Proof of Date of birth (PODB - if applicable) as per Rule 114 (4) of Income Tax Rules, 1962 which have the same name that is written on the application form.


Step 4 - Processing Fees


Payment can be made through Demand Draft, Cheque or Credit card / Debit card or Net Banking. Fee for processing PAN application:105 (93 + service tax) for PAN card to be dispatched in India. For dispatch outside India, fee is971 (including service tax).

Cheque (payable at par)/Demand Draft should be in favour of 'NSDL-PAN' payable at Mumbai and acknowledgment number should be mentioned on the reverse of the Cheque/ Demand Draft. 

If your paying online, the processing fee can be paid via net banking, credit card or debit card , after which a payment acknowledgement will be displayed. You will need to save and print acknowledgement as well.


Step 5 - Submission of Documents


The acknowledgment duly signed, affixed with photograph (in case of 'Individuals') along with Demand Draft, if any, and proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth should be sent at the below address :

PIO and OCI Card Merger

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced this Sunday, 2014 that the PIO holders will now get lifetime validity and exemption from police registration which means the PIO gets the same benefit as OCI while his visit in New York.

It must be noted that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was the first to announce the merging of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and the People of Indian Origin (PIO) cards to facilitate visa-free travel to India, rights of residency and participation in business and educational activities in the country according to the Hindu, 2011.

This re-announcement by PM Modi at New York's Madison Square Garden is a pleasant surprise of us because we know many Pondicheerians have been facing difficulties due to differences between PIO and OCI cards which gives different benefits. Even though the announcement has been made in the past and again now there are no specific dates given for the merger of PIO and OCI card.

Difference between PIO and OCI Card


PIO (Person of Indian Origin) allows visa free travels for about 15 years validity with few rights, with the PIO card to be produced alongside the foreign passport or with new passport number endorsed in your PIO card when entering or departing any port in India. But the length of stay in India for more than 180 days requires reporting to police authorities.

OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India or India's dual citizenship) on the other hand allows visa free multiple entry life-long and also to have unlimited travel and stay in India. But, it requires reapplying on new OCI every time a new passport is issued. It is very important that the person carry his existing foreign passport which should include the new visa called ‘U’ visa which is a multi-purpose, multiple-entry, lifelong visa and an OCI gets a specific right to become an Indian Citizen as per Section 5(i) and (ii) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. whereas the PIO card holder does not have this facility.

So, with PM Modi announcement of PIO and OCI Merger, PIO and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) schemes are said to be combined and so we will getting both the benefits of PIO and OCI cards (as for the date which is yet to announced will be updated as soon as we get the details ). He also said that the American tourists will get visa on arrival and Long-term tourist visas will be introduced for US citizens at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Online Booking of Retiring Rooms through IRCTC

Railways Retiring Rooms are rooms providing lodging facility to its passengers at different railway stations across India. Available in Single, Double and Dormitory type of occupancy with AC and Non AC combination, the rooms can be booked for a duration of minimum 12 hrs to maximum 48 hrs. Currently this facility is available only for about 54 railway stations across India - List of Stations Currently available for online Reservation of Railways Retiring Rooms

Online booking of Retiring Rooms or booking of Retiring Rooms through Internet is available through IRCTC website from 12:30 AM to 11:30 PM (booking hours). It should be noted that Retiring Rooms can be booked against RAC ticket and against Confirmed ticket but NOT against Wait-listed ticket. And in any case of extending your duration of stay, extension charge will be deducted.

Details required for online booking of retiring rooms are
  • PNR (one booking per PNR, Onward/Return)
  • ID Proof (PAN card, Driving License. Bank Passbook, Passport or Student ID proof)
  • Credit card or debit card
  • Confirmed ticket (or) RAC ticket (optional)

How to Book Railway Retiring Room Online

For Online Booking of Retiring Rooms through IRCTC at various station, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the website www.irctctourism.com -->Accommodation --> and click "Railways Retiring Rooms".
  2. Enter your PNR number and click enter to search. You will get details of your PNR (that you have entered)
  3. Depending upon where you need to book your retiring rooms, select "Book on source" for booking the retiring room at your source/originating station or select "Book on destination" for booking the retiring room at your destination station. And if your Reservation Station does not show up by selecting both options as given above, then try clicking on the "Book on Source Principal" for Book on source or "Book on Destination Principal" for Book on destination.
  4. In the form displayed, fill in necessary details like your Reservation source, Bed Type, Check in and Checkout date, etc.
  5. Then, click "Check Availability". You will get details of rooms available. 
  6. Now, select the Room no, Slot Duration and click on "Proceed" which redirects you to the IRCTC login page.

  1. Enter the page with your registered user name and password. If not, use guest login with your Email id and Mobile no.
  2. Your complete booking details will be displayed. Now, select the rooms you want and enter your type of ID proof (PAN card, Driving License. Bank Passbook, Passport or Student ID proof)
  3. Click proceed for payment. And you are done.

How to Cancel Railway Retiring Rooms Online


If Retiring Room is booked online, you can cancel your booking only through online and not through counter. To do so, enter the IRCTC login page either through registered name or guest login and scroll down to select “Booked Ticket” -->“Retiring Room Booked Ticket" option. Now select your booked ticket and click on the cancel ticket option.

Cancellation Online is allowed only before Check In and NOT after Check In. Cancellation fees of about 10% -100% deduction of amount paid is done depending upon the time of cancellation (10% before 48 hrs, 50% for less than 48 hrs and 100% on on the day of occupation).

Note: In Puducherry, this facility of booking your dormitories through Internet is currently unavailable. You got to book your dormitories of AC Double Bed or Non AC Dormitory either in person or computerized location only. Else opt for budget hotels in pondicherry near railway station.
