Top 10 Places to Visit in Bangkok , Thailand

Travelling to different locations gives us a lots of experience exploring the outside world as well as giving us a sense of relaxation. My dream destination spot is Bangkok. I have heard a lot about it and have them seen in movies and is one location that is in my bucket list.

So now that I have decided my location, it is time to search and research more about Bangkok special spots. And the more I come to know about Bangkok, the more I became culturally connected with it and wanted to visit it soon. Not only for me, the below lists will help all those who looks for some amazing things in Bangkok.

Top Places that I would like to visit in Bangkok

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha (The Wat Phra Kaew ): The Grand Palace in Thailand is the first place I would like to visit. With over 100 of buildings having a history of 200 years of architectural experimentation along with the most important chapel of Emerald Buddha which has a relative connection with India (being first created in India in 43 BC by Nagasena in Patna), I am more than thrilled to visit this place. The Buddha statue is named “Emerald” for its green color although the secret is that its is made of Nephrite Jade. The beauty of this whole place is its architecture in the walls of the buildings and its surroundings that speaks a volume about the changing architecture during the various reigns of the kings. The place is enormous and I can't get enough of seeing the place only through images. Being a believer in Buddha and higher spirits, I want to visit and feel the positive vibrations all around the Grand Palace.

Emerald Buddha Bangkok

The Temple of Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho): Next, I like to see another major Buddhist temple in Bangkok with a 160 ft Buddha statue lying in a horizontal posture and hence the name "reclining". By the look of it, you can see how huge the statue is and if you ought to know the meaning of his position, here is what I found. This is a place where the traditional Thai medicine and Thai massage was born. The statues that is seen here were all created showing yoga positions ( that's amazing). And on the walls, one can see engraved teachings that explains all about Therapeutic points and energy pathways. What an informative place it should be! Yes, I would love to see these age old wisdom of knowledge and in fact get myself one such Thai massage.

Wat Pho reclining Buddha

The Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun): My third in list is the temple of Dawn named after the Hindu god Aruna who is said to be the charioteer for Surya, the Sun God. According to Hindu mythology, he is now seen as the reddish glow of the sun in the early mornings. Also, this temple reinforces a mystical symbolism on all its four sides with images of the guardian gods. Another "wow" factor is that this temple marks the Thailand’s beauty of the rising sun and glows in the light during sunset. Being a believer and traveller, I love to see and immerse myself in the beauty of Wat Arun.

wat arun

The Temple of Golden Buddha: Next in line is yet another Buddhist temple known as "Phra Buddha Maha Suvarna Patimakorn", the world's largest solid gold statue (about 3 meters tall) located in the temple of Wat Traimit, Bangkok in Chinatown. It is said to be the miracle of Indian craftsmanship. The whole statue of gold is said to be in nine parts that fit perfectly with each other. A special key can be used to disassemble the statue, to facilitate its transportation and then can be fitted again together into a perfect shape.Wow! hats of to our ancestors knowledge and wisdom.

Golden Buddha

I am amazed at these rich wisdom, Buddhist temples and amazing architecture that has been preserved in Bangkok. Well, now its time to see other interesting stuffs, get some Thai foods and do some shopping around.

Bangkok Klongs: Klongs is another famous tourist spot because of its floating market with fruits, vegetables and sea-foods all sold through boat travelling through a canal. It is a completely different yet traditional lifestyle that I wanted to witness and in fact, love to have a sneak peek on their type of foods they have.

Floating Market Bangkok Klongs

Jim Thompson House: Yes, it is a museum created by Jim Thompson in Thailand. This place proudly presents an insight to the ancient and traditional architecture having a collection of various old Thai structures from all over Thailand. It would be really amazing to see these collections and in fact learn a lot of Thai’s way of living. I must go there at least once.

Jim Thompson House

The Giant Swing: Another religious structure in Bangkok with a Hindu connection. This huge structure has a story related to Lord Shiva and the Naga serpent. While the pillar of giant swing denotes Earth where Lord Siva rules, the base of the giant swing denotes the Sea where the Naga rules. To celebrate this event in history, it is said that every month a swing ceremony called Ceremony of Tri-yampawai is held according to that of the Thai lunar calendar. Yes, I would like to witness one swing ceremony, know more details of this event and see in fact how they celebrate it.

Bangkok giant swing

BTS Sky train: Imagine travelling on elevated stations (above ground) that is constructed on three levels and that too in a train. The Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) is an elevated rapid transit system in Bangkok, Thailand with two major directions helping you to explore Bangkok in a quick and convenient way. All trains have an AC, LCD monitors (for advertising through) and 4 doors on each side per car. So, I will be taking my chance to explore all around Bangkok travelling in BTS Skytrain.

BTS Sky train Bangkok

FOODS and More FOODS

Thai Foods: A travel with without food is always incomplete. Thai Foods are the highlights of Bangkok, and having seen or tasted only the version of Thai foods, I guess it is time to make my visit truly memorable. My Thai food lists includes
  • Som Tam ( a type of Salad)
  • Gang Keow Wan (Thai green curry)
  • Pad Thai (Thai style Fried Noodles)
  • Kai Jiew Moo Saap (Thai style omelet)
  • Tom Kha Kai (Chicken in Coconut Soup)
  • Gai Pad Pongali (Chicken and Thai yellow curry)
  • Pad Pak Bung Nam Man Hoy (Crispy vegetables)
  • Sang Kaya Fug Tong (Pumpkin and coconut custard)
SHOPPING ! SHOPPING !

Shopping Venues: Is it worth travelling to a new country without doing any shopping? Definitely not! I would rather do some window shopping at least instead of returning empty handed. Khao San Road is very famous for shopping in Bangkok. With its budget accommodation and shops attracting visitors, it is also called as a backpackers' destination. My uncle told me that they sell lots of handcrafts, clothes, paintings, clothes, low cost products and many books which can be bought at a good price.

bangkok Khaosan Road

Central World: It is yet another famous shopping plaza complex in Bangkok, Thailand which is said to the sixth largest shopping complex in the world. Do I want to miss this? Nope! Whether I do my shopping or not, I will have a walk around on this shopping plaza seeing different types of stores related to fashion and lifestyle products. It was said that the Central World was once the busiest shopping place in Bangkok but after a fire accident in May 2010 with the collapse of Zen department and then following repairs, it was reopened again in Sept 2010.

central world bangkok

Bangkok, is truly a vibrant city of great skyscrapers and wondrous shopping malls. With so many Buddhist temples, cultural architecture, vibrant traffics, interesting Thai massages and tasty Thai foods, it is no wonder Bangkok is the top most tourists attraction in the world. For the final goodbye - Yes, Bangkok is marked in my calender and when I return back home, I will have lots of wonderful memories to share, tons of photos to be preserved and yes, of course with my shopping bag.

Things to consider when Travelling Solo

What you MUST do when travelling solo (for Women) :

Travelling with family and friends is always fun, and you end up bonding, relaxing, and making unique memories, but sometimes, travelling alone is also a very good idea. You can soak in the sights and sounds without any distractions, and you can also learn much more about how to travel, how to communicate with people, and how to get by with the transport available.

Travelling solo gives you time for introspection, contemplation and mental relaxation. It also helps you get away from your everyday, regular life, and more often than not, you end up coming back after having made unique friendships, connections and observations.

But as a woman, travelling solo cannot be a spontaneous decision prompted solely by whim. Apart from practicalities which need to be taken care of in terms of luggage, one must also take care of other things in order to ensure a safe, fun, enriching trip.

1. Research: Some internet research on the place you will be visiting is a must. You should know a little about the culture, the roads, the language, the important sightseeing spots, and other such things.

2. Keep your essentials handy: Medicines, emergency kit( with a torch, some liquid cash, some bars of chocolate and a mosquito repellent) , clean underwear, the essential items of clothing, such as comfortable pants/jeans, good, wearable shoes which will be comfortable at all times, and your important documents should always be with you.

3. Mode of Transportation : The first thing one must do after arriving at the destination, is to find out about economical, but safe modes of transport in the city, and to find out about the most common forms of transportation which the locals take on a regular basis. For example, if travelling to Bombay, find out about the local trains, the lines, and the stops the train makes. Also, find out about train timings.

4. Always pre-book hotel rooms: It is always better to pre-book hotel rooms instead of running around from one hotel to another. And if you are booking the rooms online, make sure that you read the user reviews which are posted. They are very helpful in providing you with information on the quality of the room.

5. Travel Light : Travel light, and have a plan as to what you want to do once you get to the place. If you’re a woman who is travelling alone, it is best to carry luggage which you will be able to haul by yourself. There is no point in carrying ten different dresses and matching shoes with them. Also, you should have a rough idea about what you want to do once you get to the place. Even if you just want to relax, make sure you’re not outside, looking clueless about things.

6. Safe Food : Try not to eat dubious street food: while the more adventurous at heart cannot help themselves, if you have other people travelling with you, then handling stomach problems or other health repercussions might not be so hard, but when travelling solo, take care of your health, because if the street food makes you sick, you will end up in bed without anyone to take care of you, in a strange place, where you know very few people.

7.Emergency Kit:  Always carry emergency entertainment in handy .There might be times when you cannot venture out. A book, or your iPod is a must, otherwise you might end up boring yourself .

Years of Planning has finally bore fruit to Pondicherry Aviation and its People .Puducherry government has spend a major amount of money to make this project take life. An amount of Rs.18.95 crore was spent for land acquisition for building up the Airport and its service centers and another Rs.9.83 crore for construction of box culvert for the sewage pipe lines crossing the runway.

Airport center operations , services and training has been done by Orient Flight Service ,the aviation wing of Hindustan Group of Institutions in Pondicherry .Established in 1994, OFS is been approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India.

Anand Jabob Verghese , the director of OFS and additional director of Hindustan group of Institution has told in his interview that thought the preference of Aeronautical Engineer has large scope of pay scale and work in this industry, he should also have some knowledge in other branches of Engineering be it mechanical, electrical or software according to today's shift in technology .

pondicherry aviation service

A private sector PATS( Pondicherry Aviation and Travel Services ) run by Mr Srivivasan Yadav , is a flight service center operating at Pondicherry airport helps in providing recruitment and training of support staff including flight planning services and customer services .

Contact of PATS (as from Google sites)- Tel: 0413-2256281 ,  9790032778

This move is expected to revive the economic growth and there by increase the travel potential in Pondicherry City making the already acclaimed Tourist Spot more stronger

Tourism minister of Puducherry, P Rajavelu has already revealed that Spice Jet Airlines will operate flights from Puducherry to Bangalore from October 10, 2011 through The Times of India Journal . "The Spice Jet Airlines has got clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation to operate flights from Puducherry to Bangalore from 10th October 2011," he said.

On Oct 17,2012,  he also added in an informal chat with the news-person that in the present condition only small size aircrafts could be operated and hence, the administration was holding talks with institutions such as Spicejets, Kingfisher etc as per Chennai Online Journal

Chief Minister N Rangasamy said that the works on the terminal building has almost been completed and is likely to go on air in few months .He also added that Talks are on with certain private players including Jet Airways, Kingfisher and SpiceJet to operate the services - Source [ZeeNews]

According to sources from The Hindu, the airport expansion is done in two phases , with Phase 1 of extending the existing runway by 260 metres was taken up to enable landing of ATR type of aircraft along with ground support facilities and in Phase 2 , extension of an additional 1,100 meters of runway by acquiring 200 acres in neighbouring Tamil Nadu State limits to operate large jet aircraft.

Phase 1 has been completed to handle AAI type of landing and takeoff with a terminal building supposed to handle 300 passengers  and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

So owing to the facts from credible sources, the first flight to be operated by Spice Jet  from Bangalore to Puducherry would be in the first week of December 2012

Pondicherry Beach

Pondicherry Beaches are unique in its beauty and have lots of people strolling on the corridors and pavements on the beach almost throughout the years. It is one of the most favored part in the city.I recently wrote an article about this beach and I rewrite it here as it revives the beauty of the beach with a sweet story that had won me a competition.

The story of the beach starts from here....
Summer has officially started with heat wave building up as Agni Nakshatra ( Kathiri Veyyil) as usual on April in my home town , Pondicherry. With the ongoing heat that will last till June, frequent current cut-offs and rolling sweats on foreheads warning my body to rehydrate more , the health conscious "me" always equipped my refrigerator with lots of summer fruits like water melon ,oranges, lemons, mango, grapes and curds. But with summer holidays on start (hurray!!) and lots of excitement for parks, Tours and get-together, there is more work outdoors than indoors.

Krya was my assigned task for taking her a day out in Pondicherry , whose coast line is the Bay of Bengal Beach itself.

Paradise Beach , Pondicherry

The Beach Harbour -a view from other side of the road
Beach & Gandhi statue view from Cafe lounge
Having born and brought up in Pondicherry, I have known this beach to be the best , impressive place to stroll and have a great time to watch the waves. The breathtaking vision of the gleaming waters under the morning sun brought liveliness and radiance to the beach.Adding to it were the architectural buildings and monuments that stood facing the sea .I told Kyra all about the French rule , how the French got attracted to the Pondy and set it as their home and also about the historical French architecture that separates itself from the rest of Pondy. We took photograph under the 4.25 meters Ganthi statue that stood majestic gaurded by eight exquisitely carved monolithic pillars brought here from Gingee and erected in 1866.I even told Kyra about a secret behind the Gandhi statue (which was told to me by my father), which still many Pondicherrians aren't aware of.There was once a tunnel below the Gandhi statue that leads all the way to the Gingee through which these pillars made by a single stone was transported to Pondy .But failing to resurrect it after few suffocation and deaths , the Government finally closed it for good.

We then shopped for hand-made crafts made by using sea-shells from the shore from Four-squares that stood lining near the Gandhi statue. Kyra loved the chains, and toys made from seashells and embellished herself with them.I took her to the beach-side cafe  lounge where we had the best cafe just overlooking the Beach. She just loved the cold drinks served there.

Then, I took her to another spot a little outside of Pondicherry with a few miles ride away from Paradise Beach .

 The Serene Beach, Pondicherry
Exotic pass-time under the golden sands
Having a dip under the shallow waters of serene beach, Pondy
Beach under the Summer Sun
And it stands up to its name.Away from honking vehicles and active city , it is the most serene place that stretch itself all along the coast with golden sands having little secrets of hidden sea shells that lures people to experiment with its possessions. We indulged ourselves in various activities like swimming , boating, canoeing , etc that is been served as a Tourist attraction .We made sand castles  and also made patterns with our hands and legs on the fine beach sand.

It was a perfect place and day for sunbathing and swimming with a perfect partner in place.I was very much relived of escaping the summer sun with such a lively company who enjoys splashing waters everywhere and and who knows how to stay protected from the summer sun.We then brought tender coconuts that were sold on the beach side and sat on the sand chatting and drinking as we admired the Reddish Orange sparkles of the setting sun.

"Summer", I thought , "it can' t be avoided but still can be made wonderful if only we have the right attitude to make it enjoyable".The Sun rays that peeped through my window sill in the morning now succumbed into the oceans slowly as we neared the end of the day.

Kyra and I parted with a heavy heart and this day with the summer girl took a special place on my diary having the best time under the spell of waters on the bright sunny day.And finally I blew kisses to my native town Pondicherry  for it had saved my day with its exotic beach location .

What more a beautiful explanation with photographs would be needed to write an article about the Pondicherry beach

Sri Aurobindo Ashram , Puducherry

One of the influential place in Pondicherry, this ashram was evolved for spriritual realisation founded by the Sri Aurobindo , one of the leaders of the Nationalist movement as well as a spiritual leader along with his collaborator the Mother. After Sir Aurobindo,The Mother carried on his work until November 17, 1973 and till now by many other spiritual peoples of the ashram

As depicted by the Mother, Sir Aurobindo was quite in both heart and mind, has a very observational  power and a strong positive vibrational force that he has achieved through Internal Yoga .

All quotes are from the Collected Works of the Mother.

Sri Aurobindo came upon earth to teach this truth to men. He told them that man is only a transitional being living in a mental consciousness, but with the possibility of acquiring a new consciousness, the Truth-consciousness, and capable of living a life perfectly harmonious, good and beautiful, happy and fully conscious. During the whole of his life upon earth, Sri Aurobindo gave all his time to establish in himself this consciousness he called supramental, and to help those gathered around him to realise it.
from Volume 12, On Education, p.116
(24 July 1951)

I have seen Sri Aurobindo doing this in somebody's head, somebody who used to complain of being troubled by thoughts. It was as if his hand reached out and took hold of the little black dancing point and then did this (gesture with the finger-tips), as when one picks up an insect, and he threw it far away. And that was all. All still, quiet, luminous...
from Volume 9, Questions and Answers 1957-58, p.254
(8 January 1958)

Sir Aurobindo was also a great writer who had written many works under the name of The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga , Savitri, Karmayogin,Bande Mataram — I–II,Essays Divine and Human,Essays in Philosophy and Yoga ,Vedic and Philological Studies and more. All his works and his history can be downloaded from the official website Sri Aurobindo
